Community Northern Beaches Inc is a community-based, non-profit, non government organisation providing a range of community services, including multicultural, homeless support, domestic violence support, family, child and youth services, and volunteer programs.

Community Northern Beaches has been serving the Northern Beaches area since 1977.

It has provided a service for migrants in the Northern Beaches since 1992, providing settlement services for refugees, humanitarian entrants and eligible migrants. In particular, it has worked with the Tibetan community, the largest group of humanitarian entrants in the Northern Beaches, since 1995.

The centre provides a range of multicultural services, including settlement services, migration advice, information, assessment and referrals, casework and community development. Its Multicultural Volunteer Program finds work for migrants, some of whom have gone onto full-time paid employment.

Community Northern Beaches has developed a high level of expertise, recognised in the region by the ethnic community, and by government and other agencies. The centre has lobbied hard to ensure that the needs of migrant communities are recognised despite the misconception the area is only characterised by high levels of wealth and advantage.

As well as services targeted at individuals and families, the centre has organised multicultural festivals, community information sessions and forums, and managed to provide a wide range of services with little funding.

Its vision is to build social capital and enhance the quality of life for the community.

Target group

Community Northern Beaches’ Multicultural Service helps new arrivals settle into life on the Northern Beaches and participate equitably in Australian mainstream society as soon as possible.

More than a quarter of people living on the Northern Beaches were born overseas, and over 11 per cent of local residents speak a language other than English at home. Community Northern Beaches celebrates this wonderful diversity and welcomes people from around the world, including migrants, refugees, backpackers and other overseas visitors.

Programs

Community Northern Beaches provides settlement services to newly arrived migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants living in the Northern Beaches area, during the first five years of migration. Clients benefit from the broad range of services and structures the centre has to offer.

Community Northern Beaches provides help with housing, employment, vocational training, health services, legal services, and much more. It hosts orientation and information sessions, workshops and consultation sessions with Northern Beaches CALD communities, linking people to mainstream services such as TAFE and Centrelink, as well as to specialist services, including the Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors, which helps refugees recover from their experiences and build a new life in Australia.

Community Northern Beaches also assists migrants not eligible for the Settlement Grants Program service, as well as tourists, backpackers, international students and other overseas visitors.
