Falah Abbo, who arrived in Australia from Iraq in 2014, approached CORE Community Services after he had been assisted by the settlement program, wanting to share his knowledge and use his skill of teaching.
He had worked for a long time as a physics teacher and had also studied English prior to coming to Australia.
Falah has now been volunteering at CORE for two years, working closely with Iraqi Settlement Worker Murshid Amer in running the Citizenship Course.
The course helps migrants who want to become an Australian citizen, including preparation for the Australian Citizenship test.
“It is important that refugees understand what makes Australia, and through this work I can help the community,” he said.
“Through my experience with CORE, I can really see they are helping people, and they are so helpful. Through volunteering I feel satisfaction and inner peace.”
