Sydney Multicultural Community Services (MCS) has highlighted the importance of Refugee Week 2022 in advocating for the wider community, institutions, and governments to support the healing process of refugees.

It co-hosted a range of different events during the week, including advocacy events held with Randwick and Mosman Councils, in which local communities were encouraged to reflect on what it meant to be a refugee.

Guest speakers shared powerful stories and poetry on their lived experience as refugees who have settled in Australia.

Guests were also treated to mesmerising music performances and tasty food from refugee catering services.

The events brought community members from all different walks of life together to celebrate the important contributions that refugees make to Australia, to strengthen community connections, and to increase support for the settlement of refugees in Australia.

Sydney MCS also engaged with local youth to raise awareness of the experience of refugees, and to advocate for greater support.

Sydney MCS settlement case worker Rigzin Yuthok spoke about his experience working with refugees and facilitated an activity for the school students at Matraville Public School together with the Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite, the Federal Member for Kingsford Smith.
